I have the opportunity to purchase as NH 1725 4WD, 120 hrs, for $9500. No attachments at this price, but that's negotiable. Is this a good price, reasonable price, or a rip-off. any input is appreciated.

Price questions are difficult. A deal is a one-time thing that depends on what is right about the tractor and for the buyer at that time. In addition, there usually aren’t enough of the same types used compact on the market in any area to establish a general market value. I think it's a good idea to do look around in your area to know what's available and then develop several alternatives for yourself. Take some time and do a little research (this board is pretty good at responding to specific questions about a tractor). You might miss a good deal, but you also might avoid getting a good deal on the wrong tractor, or just a bad deal. Deals too good to be true are truly rare, and there always are used tractors around. In terms of 1725's, the Ford 1720 is a fairly popular tractor that may still be in production by New Holland. I think the 1725 is a somewhat stripped down version of the 1720. If price comparisons are made with a 1720, I'd want to make sure the tractors have comparable equipment and options. Options of 4wd and hydrostatic transmission add a lot to the price of a new tractor and also the value of a used one. Price comparisons among tractors with and without these two options are really just apples and oranges. I don't know, but a HST option may not be available for the 1725. ....

1725 is the number they used on the first BOOMER tractors. That would mean the tractor is a 1996 or newer. It sounds like a fair price even if the tractor has the standard 9/3 transmission. ....

Dave: I think your comment enabled me to make sense of some tractortips.com stats. I always thought the 1720 was a contemporary to my mid-80's 1710, and NH stopped production of the 1710 but continued with the 1710. I understood the main difference between the 1710 and 1720 was that the 1720 had a 4-cylinder engine and a separate PS pump. I checked tractortips stats before my earlier post and found the 1710, 20 and 25 listed under Ford tractors. The 20 and 25 both indicated 3-cylinder engines and production only for the past several years. From all this, I guess that the current NH 1720 is not the same tractor as the earlier Ford 1720. ....

Tom. The 1720 replaced the 1710 in [I think] 1987 and production continued up to about a year ago. The tractor remained the same other then the name change throughout its production. I think the tractor you were thinking of when you replied to the original question was the 1715, a stripped down version of the 1720. Regards, Dave in Vt. ....

Clyde, that seems like a resonable price for the 1725. But you should be aware of several features (or lack thereof) of this tractor. If memory serves me I recall this tractor has a gear-transmission with no live PTO or diff. lock. Those are really the only differences between the 1725 and the TC29. Still if those features are not crucial to you, I would seriously consider it. Used compact tractors are not common! Good luck.

Thanks Dave, I don't always have a firm grasp on history. Yes, 1715 is what I remember now. It's coming back to me, and it restores my sense of normality. Bigger numbers usually mean more, not less, stuff. ....

I made the same assumptions/mis-recollections when I rushed out to look at an advertised used 1725. Having already looked at and played with "D" model Boomers, I was disappointed in the "basicness" of the 1725. However, with about 200 hours on it, R-4s & 7308 FEL, the owner was looking for about $13,000, so yours seems like a great find (if yours has a loader & R-4s, if not then it ain't so great!). As stated above, if it'll do what you need, consider it! Used compacts are not all that common but I believe will start to get more-so given the numbers out there and IMHO - the economy will start to push some folks into divesting of their "toys" - just an opinion.
